Plenary Speakers

Carl Wieman

Carl Wieman received his Ph.D. in physics from Stanford University in 1977. He has held a joint appointment as Professor of Physics and of the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University since 2013, and before that was at UBC and U. Colorado.

Wieman has done extensive experimental research in both atomic physics and science and engineering education at the university level.

He has received numerous awards for both, including the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2001 and the Carnegie Foundation Professor of the Year award for education in 2004.

Wieman served as founding chair of the Board of Science Education of the National Academy of Sciences and was the founder of PhET, which provides online interactive simulations that are used 100 million times per year to learn science.

 

He served as Associate Director for Science in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the White House from 2010-12.

 

Wieman directed the science education initiatives at the Universities of Colorado and British Columbia, which carried out large scale change in teaching methods across university science departments.

 

Wieman published a book on large scale change, “Improving How Universities Teach Science; Lessons from the Science Education Initiative.”

 

He is currently studying expertise and problem solving in science and engineering, and how this can be better measured and taught. He is also studying intro physics labs, including showing and explaining the ineffectiveness of traditional ones, and how intro labs can be improved. Most recently, he has been awarded the Yidan Prize for educational research.

Margaret Dominguez

Dr. Margaret Dominguez is an Optical Engineer and Associate Branch Head of the Optics Branch at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. She earned her B.S in Physics from the Universidad de las Americas Puebla in Mexico and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona.

Margaret has conducted optical design, alignment, and metrology on the ground support equipment for the James Webb Space Telescope. She also carried out spectroscopic measurements on witness samples collected from the Hubble Space Telescope. Most recently, she has been working on the Roman Space Telescope; where she is the Optical lead of the Grism (grating prism) component, a slitless spectrograph on board the Wide Field Instrument. It will survey emission-line galaxies one million miles away from our planet, with a scheduled launch in 2027.


Margaret’s hobbies include outreach about optics and the important work done at NASA. She has been invited to give both outreach and technical talks in the United States, Mexico, Spain and Peru to share her passion for STEM and to help recruit more people into STEM. As part of this educational outreach effort, she was selected to be a TECHNOLOchica and participant of Latina SciGirls, programs funded by PBS, NSF, Univision TV network and the National Center for Women & Information Technology. These are initiatives designed to raise awareness among young Latinas and their families in museums, science centers and schools about opportunities and careers in STEM.

Margaret is also a STEM advisory board member at the Children’s Science Center at Fairfax Virginia and a member of the DiscoverE Board of Directors. Most recently she was selected to be a 2021 OPTICA ambassador and the winner of the NASA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion award. Margaret enjoys traveling and when she is not at NASA, she teaches Jazzercise (dance fitness exercise), watches movies and likes to go for walks.
